Aalto University Demonstrates World’s First Superconducting Quantum Heat Engine in Superconducting Circuits

Researchers at Aalto University have realized the world’s first experimental cyclic quantum heat engine operating inside a superconducting circuit. The engine uses a transmon qubit coupled to a quantum-circuit refrigerator to perform a full Otto cycle at millikelvin temperatures. Positive work is generated from quantum-scale heat flows, validating the concept in practical hardware. This development reduces dependence on external control lines and supports Finland’s goal of a 1,000-logical-qubit quantum computer by 2035. Results are published in Nature Communications.

EuroHPC JU Launches Q-Neko Project to Strengthen EU–Japan Hybrid Quantum-HPC Collaboration

The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) has launched the Q-Neko project to strengthen collaboration with Japan in hybrid high-performance computing and quantum computing. Coordinated by CSC – IT Center for Science in Finland and funded with around €4 million from Horizon Europe, the 36-month project aims to develop software platforms, benchmarks, and standards for applications in CO₂ reduction, telecommunications, fluid dynamics, satellite image analysis, materials science, and quantum-enhanced artificial intelligence. By connecting leading EuroHPC systems with quantum hardware in Europe and Japan, including Japan’s ABCI-Q system, Q-Neko will foster expert exchanges, build a skilled workforce, and produce a technology roadmap for future EU-Japan strategic collaboration in hybrid HPC and QC technologies.
