Fraunhofer ISI and Saarland University Publish Quantum Repeaters Technology Roadmap Under SQuaD Project

Fraunhofer ISI has released “Quantum Repeaters – A Technology Roadmap,” prepared with Saarland University within the SQuaD project. The study compares hardware platforms including diamond color centers, trapped atoms and ions, atomic ensembles, rare-earth crystals, and semiconductor quantum dots. No single platform has emerged as dominant. First demonstrations of quantum repeaters capable of lower-loss long-distance transmission are projected before 2035. Near-term applications center on extended-range quantum key distribution, with longer-term potential in distributed quantum computing and sensor networks.

Aliro Technologies and zerothird demonstrated a live entanglement-based quantum key distribution network at Cisco’s Photonics Center in Vimercate, Italy. Xairos Achieves Two-Kilometer Milestone with Ares Quantum Optical Terminal

Xairos Systems has completed two-kilometer free-space range testing for its Ares Quantum Optical Terminal. The demonstration successfully established simultaneous quantum and optical links with 10 Gbps free-space optical communications. This validates quantum-secure communications and resilient PNT capabilities for contested environments. The system supports future mesh networks across aircraft, UAS, ships, and space assets.

Telia and QMill Demonstrate a New Quantum-Enhanced Data Encryption Method for Mobile Networks

Telia Finland and QMill have successfully demonstrated quantum-enhanced encryption for mobile networks, offering protection against both classical and quantum computing attacks. The new method leverages local or cloud quantum computers to secure critical communications. This builds on Telia’s prior quantum key distribution achievements and has been presented to the Finnish Defense Forces. Future plans include expanding the technology across various use cases.
