The demonstration aims to improve discovery and mapping of underground critical-mineral deposits. It is also expected to help strengthen America’s critical-minerals supply chain. The announcement was made during the grand opening of the Colorado Quantum Innovation Center in Louisville.
Quantum Gravity Gradiometry for Subsurface Mapping
QGG technology measures extremely small variations in Earth’s gravitational field. Those measurements can reveal differences in underground density and geological structure. Such differences are often difficult to characterize from the surface. Used alongside existing geological and geophysical methods, the approach can help exploration teams identify promising geological structures.
Teams can then narrow exploration targets and prioritize where further work and drilling should occur. Infleqtion’s quantum sensing technologies are currently being advanced through programs with the U.S. Department of War, NASA, and the UK Royal Navy. The company is evaluating several potential field-test locations within Colorado’s Third Congressional District. Additional details on final site selection and timing are expected as the program progresses.
Supporting Domestic Critical Minerals Security
The planned field test builds on Infleqtion’s support for the pending Quantum-Enhanced Critical Minerals Mapping Act of 2026 (H.R. 9646). Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.) introduced H.R. 9646 on July 13, 2026. The legislation would direct the U.S. Geological Survey to conduct mobile quantum gravity gradiometry surveys in at least three priority critical-minerals focus areas identified under its Earth Mapping Resources Initiative.
The Infleqtion demonstration is separate from the proposed federal survey requirements in H.R. 9646, but supports the legislation’s broader objectives. Infleqtion CEO Matt Kinsella testified before the House Natural Resources Committee’s Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources on July 21 in support of the legislation. Critical minerals are essential to U.S. defense systems, advanced manufacturing, energy infrastructure, and emerging technologies.

Yet discovering and developing domestic resources remains costly, time-intensive, and uncertain. “America cannot secure the supply chains it cannot see,” said Kinsella. “The first step toward mineral independence is knowing what you actually have. Hurd stated the United States should not have to rely on foreign countries for the critical minerals needed for the economy and national security.
