The Qubit Report: September 9, 2026
Key Takeaways
Quantinuum posted Helix logical-error figures on Helios, including 4.6 × 10^-5 per qubit per round with no post-selection.
Xanadu opened a lithography collaboration with ASML. SkyWater hired Mihir Bhaskar to run quantum wafer lines. Silicon Quantum Computing cut STM patterning from hours to minutes.
QNu Labs raised ₹200 crore (~$24 million). Altera shipped PQC secure boot on Agilex 3 and Agilex 5. Keyfactor crossed $200 million ARR.
SandboxAQ flew AQNav on Northrop Grumman’s Lumberjack UAS. Cleveland Clinic, RIKEN, and IBM reached Gordon Bell finals on a 12,635-atom protein. Several items remain MoUs, architectures, or error-mitigation gains, not finished machines.
Quantinuum ran Helix codes on Helios. Foundries and lithography vendors sold process slots. PQC moved into FPGAs, blockchains, and an Indian cybersecurity raise while MagNav flew on an attritable drone.
Research & Breakthroughs
Cleveland Clinic, RIKEN, and IBM reached the 2026 ACM Gordon Bell Prize finals with a 12,635-atom protein model on IBM Heron processors plus Fugaku, Miyabi-G, and ROQUO, per the IBM newsroom. The winner is due at SC26 in Chicago, Nov. 15 to 20. Kenta Kasai posted quantum LDPC designs in Quantum, per Tech Xplore. Qedma and Denmark’s HQC2 team mapped a water-molecule energy surface on IBM’s Aachen processor and cited 30 to 50 times better accuracy with QESEM versus raw shots.
Lab notes also covered a timed flip against entanglement sudden death, K2Cr3As3 phases, layer-tuned magnets, Tb(IV), 60 Hz squeezing, GHZ voting, and lower-energy quantum-dot lithography.
Hardware
Quantinuum validated Helix, a concatenated [[10,2,3]] plus [[4,2,2]] architecture, on Helios, posting a 4.6 × 10^-5 per-qubit per-round error with no post-selection and a 99.925 percent logical GHZ lower bound across 20 syndrome rounds. Helix is a hardware result, not a finished large machine.
Xanadu and ASML opened a lithography collaboration on photonic line-edge roughness, with no dollar figure or date, also posted on Xanadu’s press page. SkyWater named Mihir Bhaskar SVP of SkyWater Quantum Solutions. Silicon Quantum Computing cut STM patterning from hours to minutes.
La Luce Cristallina began shipping STO-on-insulator wafers. EuroHPC selected QUDORA’s NEQTAR near-field ion-control path and NVision’s QOSMOS spin-photon path (€293,455 Phase 1). QuTech, Delft, and Fujitsu showed a tin-vacancy diamond module near 1.55 K and still aim for a 2027 optical multi-module link. Fujitsu and Yaqumo started STAR tests on Yaqumo neutral-atom hardware. EE Times framed scaling as a control-electronics problem.
Software & Algorithms
Kasai codes and the Qedma water-molecule run sit in the research desk. Qoro and the STFC Hartree Centre signed an MoU to wire Qoro’s Divi and Maestro stack through QRMI into Hartree schedulers, with IBM and Pasqal listed as backends. Documented UK science workflows are the near-term artifact. Extension to physical QPUs remains conditional.
Industry & Business
QNu Labs closed a ₹200 crore (~$24 million) Series A1 co-led by India’s National Quantum Mission and Speciale Invest, with Sony Innovation Fund, Gaja Capital, and Artha Ventures in, toward a ₹375 crore stack and the India Quantum Secure and Sensing Networks project. Local coverage framed the raise as a digital-infrastructure test.
Keyfactor said ARR topped $200 million in early Q3 2026. SEALSQ flagged Quobly’s TNO and Orange Quantum Systems test pacts, restated a $5 million Quobly commercial deal, and added Chicago’s EeroQ as the ninth Quantum Highway hub.
JETRO and Purdue signed an MoU covering semiconductors, quantum, and AI.
Security & Governance
Altera added PQC-enabled secure boot on Agilex 3 and Agilex 5 FPGAs now shipping. Algorithms were not named. CSO Online framed PQC adoption as a national-security issue tied to NIST FIPS 203-205. Qtonic hired former Google MD Gina Fratarcangeli as senior advisor.
On-chain PQC also moved: Algorand named William Herkelrath CEO and pointed to live Falcon-1024 accounts; a16z crypto launched Lattice Jolt; Ethereum EIP-8288 merged Sept. 9 as a frame type for post-quantum signatures and STARKs, a repository event rather than a mainnet fork; LayerZero and Coinbase pushed readiness work ahead of 2029 clocks.
An npj Quantum Information study flagged VOA luminescence near 1107 nm as a wavelength side channel in chip QKD.
Networks & Communications
GÉANT and the Quantum Internet Alliance signed an MoU on Sept. 8 to move European quantum networking from lab prototypes toward field trials.
SEALSQ and WISeSat pitched a commercial Quantum Spatial Orbital Cloud in Paris, with a first SpaceX-linked launch slated for Q4 2026 and a path of up to 100 satellites through 2033. The pitch is a product plan, not an on-orbit demo.
USTC posted a time-evolving turbulence model for satellite-to-ground QKD.
Sensing & Metrology
SandboxAQ flew AQNav magnetic and visual navigation on Northrop Grumman’s Lumberjack attritable UAS in a GPS-denied style trial. The flight is a successful platform test, not a fielded inventory item.
Academia & Workforce
Physics World argued campuses should judge quantum purchases by what students learn on real hardware, not by qubit headlines. Italian undersecretary Alessio Butti opened a U.S. mission in New York with IonQ meetings and Q-Alliance talk. Fed Gov Today carried a Pentagon-timing argument from Helm Innovations’ Steve Hoffman.
Events & Conferences
memQ set an Oct. 6 webinar with SAS on an enterprise adoption roadmap. MIT Technology Review’s EmTech Future 2026 puts quantum on the Cambridge, Mass., agenda Sept. 29 to Oct. 1.
Bottom Line
Wednesday’s wires are process and control. Helix numbers sit on Helios. Lithography, wafers, STM minutes, and near-field grants sit beside FPGA secure boot and a ₹200 crore cybersecurity raise. MagNav flew once on an attritable airframe. Gordon Bell finals and water-molecule accuracy gains remain hybrid HPC-plus-mitigation results. Treat the factory and the paper as progress. Treat neither as a finished fault-tolerant machine. Keep calm and quibt along!
