Quantum Gravimetry Adapted for Marine Use

Quantum gravimetry measures minute variations in the Earth’s gravitational field caused by mass distributions. Atomionics’ GRAVIO instrument employs cold atom interferometry: a cloud of atoms is released into freefall and interrogated by laser pulses, yielding absolute, drift-free gravity data. The company’s AI platform, ORE-O, converts those readings into three-dimensional subsurface models.

GRAVIO has operated commercially across Asia, Australia, Europe, and the United States, according to the company. In one active mine environment the company reports that GRAVIO produced a 3D ground model that matched drill-hole ground truth to better than 95 percent without additional drilling, demonstrating resilience to industrial vibration and shock according to the company.

The same passive sensing approach, which does not emit signals into the environment, is being adapted for marine use. Gravimetry is well suited to detecting subsurface and seabed mass distributions. While the underlying physics is in principle sensitive to mass distributions more broadly, practical marine detection of water-column features remains under development and is a stated target of the company’s ocean roadmap rather than a currently demonstrated capability at scale.

Singapore’s position as a major container port and undersea cable landing point gives potential relevance for infrastructure monitoring, resource assessment, and navigational awareness once the technology is proven in marine settings. Atomionics maintains collaboration with the Future Systems and Technology Directorate of MINDEF Singapore and Cap Vista to advance dual-use quantum technology; the parties are exploring further work on ocean deployment of quantum gravimetry.

Facility Supports Scaling and Dual-Use Path

The new headquarters consolidates the full instrument lifecycle under one roof: physics laboratories, mechanical assembly, electronics, and the AI interpretation platform, together with a Quantum Experience Gallery that displays successive sensor generations.

The integrated layout is intended to accelerate iteration from laboratory physics to field-deployable systems and subsequent manufacturing scale-up in Singapore for markets including Australia, the United States, and India.

Cap Vista’s involvement forms part of its mandate to nurture deep-tech companies with dual-use potential for defence and security. Enterprise Singapore has highlighted the development as evidence of Singapore’s growing quantum ecosystem and its capacity to translate frontier research into commercial deep-tech solutions. Atomionics’ longer-term objective is a continuously updated, living three-dimensional map of the Earth’s subsurface spanning both land and sea.
