The Qubit Report: September 28, 2026
Quantum Computing Wrap-Up for September 28, 2026. The Qubit Report Staff analyzed, sorted, and synthesized this quantum computing news wrap-up. Fairfax County Public Schools lined up a refrigerator-sized XeedQ machine for Skyview High School. Quobly added FAMES Pilot Line access beside its STMicroelectronics 300 mm track, still pointing at Alloy Pioneer by year-end. Quantonation and Deep Ocean Capital put a €1 million SAFE into QSENSATO’s vapor-cell fab. Pasqal stepped off PROQCIMA after finishing phase-one technical objectives and was asked for a civil FTQC brief. Ninety percent of surveyed quantum firms still buy at least one part from another country.

Homework That Hums
The talent argument stopped being a slide. Fairfax County Public Schools, Connected DMV, and the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority said Skyview High School will host an operational K-12 quantum computer from Leipzig-based XeedQ. Install is slated for December 2026. Student work starts spring 2027. Superintendent Michelle C. Reid framed it as preparing students for their future, not the past. XeedQ CEO Gopalakrishnan Balasubramanian said students should work on real hardware while the field is still being built. Austin is planning the adult version.
Mayor Kirk Watson issued a letter of support and UT Austin’s TACC signed an MOU on a planned 16.5-acre Occam Foundry campus in southeastern Travis County, with a fab bay, a sensing lab, and a hub designed to house a working quantum system next to HPC. Watson’s line: other states built clusters around a federal lab, Texas can build one around industries it already owns.
Florida State University received $2.1 million NIST Community Project Funding for a campus testbed that will throw turbulence, high fields, and cryogenic cycling at entangled-photon links between the IRCB, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, and the MagLab.
UCL’s children’s OCT project is imaging, not a QPU, but NIHR tied Siloton’s work to its quantum-research ecosystem investment.
Checks, Fabs, and FAMES
Grenoble kept stacking process options. Quobly and CEA-Leti said FAMES Pilot Line access now complements the STMicroelectronics 300 mm QSOI track, a silicon collaboration note aimed at later patterning flows, not a new qubit count. Quobly still talks Alloy Pioneer by the end of 2026 and a million-qubit target in 2032. That is a roadmap, not a ship date.
In Bari, Quantonation and Deep Ocean Capital put a €1 million SAFE into QSENSATO manufacturing so the University of Bari Aldo Moro spin-off can stand up an in-house atomic vapor-cell fab at TecnoPolis in Valenzano. CEO Vito Giovanni Lucivero said the product problem is repeatability, not another lab magnetometer.
Quandela CEO Niccolo Somaschi told Korean chip partners he wants two years of module, packaging, and cryogenic work toward mass-producible photonic chips, with Seoul for computing, Jeonnam-Gwangju for communications, and Busan-Ulsan for sensing.
Ministers and the Parts List
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told an IIT Madras alumni hall in Bengaluru that India’s next infrastructure wave is AI, semiconductor chips, and quantum built on both. The Sitharaman infrastructure line is a budget signal, not a tender. Korea arrived with companies. KIST took OptiQ-Labs, xDots, Bright Quantum, and SQK to Quantum World Congress 2026 and reported hooks into D-Wave, Microsoft, and Japan’s AIST, per the KIST startup dispatch.
OptiQ-Labs flagged a U.S. East Coast office for November. Underneath those speeches sits the QED-C, QuIC, Quantum Industry Canada, UK Quantum, Q-STAR, and KQIA cross-border supply study dated 23 September.
One hundred sixty firms in 15 headquarters countries. Ninety percent buy at least one part abroad. Seventy-four percent sell to at least one foreign customer. Median shop: three supplier countries and three customer countries. China appears as a supplier location, not as a headquarters in this sample.
Paris Pivots, Atoms on the Books
Pasqal told markets it finished the first phase of the French defense program LSQUARE, also known as PROQCIMA, after meeting the technical objectives it was handed. The French framework update now points the company at civil programs being defined by SGPI and DGE, starting with a requested neutral-atom FTQC research plan. That is an off-ramp from a defense pilot, not a claim that fault tolerance arrived this morning. The materials bench did not wait.
Manchester is leading the five-year EPSRC MEAD programme with Imperial and Leeds, reported as a £12.6 million grant on the 8 September programme announcement, pushing single-atom implants, isotopic silicon, single-photon sources, and masers into prototype devices. Fraunhofer EMFT, on the wiring floor, lists superconducting interconnects thinner than 100 micrometers with more than 80 shielded lines per inch.
HQS COO Iris Schwenk, in a Karlsruhe leadership interview published 21 August, kept the industrial brief: sell what already works in chemistry and NMR, and say out loud what does not.
Clocks, Drones, and Entropy
Quantum X Labs said it is folding a patent-pending Ramsey-CPT atomic clock together with Rydberg RF sensing for GPS-denied defense and aerospace. Read the clock-plus-Rydberg note carefully. Development is underway. No fully integrated system has been demonstrated, and performance is not assured. That caveat is the news.
Quantum Cyber N.V. (Nasdaq: QUCY) named Tzvi Lev head of Middle East sales to push an autonomous defense stack across the GCC, per the Lev appointment release. It later told investors the live pillars are interceptor drones, a licensed quantum antenna for magnetic navigation, and U.S. manufacturing at a roughly 50,000-square-foot Bridgeport plant, with a claimed 100,000-drone annual target in the strategy presentation recap. Those capacity figures are company claims.
Crypta Labs published an embedded entropy guide for OEMs who need QRNG hardware to survive years of unattended FPGA and MCU duty.
Noise Labs and Diamond Desks
University of Washington students in the AQET capstone, sponsored by AWS, built a noise lab that climbs from dynamical decoupling on a Rigetti Cepheus-1 QPU to zero-noise extrapolation to a simulated rotated surface code.
The AWS capstone write-up is a computing story as much as a physics one. FirstQFM argued that AI-guided quantum stacks will show up first in energy bills and hardware budgets, not in asymptotic speedups that die under error-correction overhead. Damian Rovara and Robert Wille put design automation into Scratch-style blocks so students can compile and verify without drowning in text gates.
AIST said a diamond-sensor current comparator shrinks the core to a third the size and a tenth the mass, with 5×10⁻⁸ A/A reproducibility at 1 A in the AIST calibration release dated 18 August. Tritt, Turner, and Barson posted exact NV Breit-Rabi formulae for nitrogen-14 and nitrogen-15.
Theory That Will Not Be Free
Oxford trapped-ion work with Madrid theory support watched the Aharonov-Bohm effect in a hybrid simulator: qubits as gauge fields, ion motion as matter. When flux sat in the loop, tunneling froze.
The Oxford hybrid experiment is a lattice-gauge appetizer, not a collider replacement. Mohan, Pandit, Lewenstein, and Bera put a harder limit on quantum battery reliability in PRX Quantum 7, 033057: work noise and power noise cannot both be squeezed at once. Tang, Roth, Faist, Liu, Eisert, and Liu proved fermionic error correction is never free. Exact, or even accurate-enough, fermionic QEC demands non-Gaussian operations, and the logical space of a nontrivial fermionic code holds no pure Gaussian state. That is a physics tax, not a compiler bug.
Coherent walks on percolated small-world graphs showed extra links can hurt quantum transport. A DMRG study reported a non-Abelian spin liquid on a spin-1 square lattice. Tomorrow in Donostia, Vladimir Juricic lectures on hyperbolic lattices and wormholes. An untitled APS item remains in the user stack at DOI bjj5-49pg.
Bottom Line
Today’s Quantum Computing Wrap-Up is the sound of classrooms, pilot lines, and import ledgers arriving in the same inbox, which means the race is now about who can build, teach, and source at the same time.
