Alice & Bob Joins €4.6 Million QuBriC Network for Quantum Error Correction Doctoral Training

Alice & Bob has joined QuBriC, Europe’s first doctoral network entirely dedicated to quantum error correction. The €4.6 million Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) initiative spans 48 months and brings together 16 universities and seven quantum companies to recruit and train 15 doctoral researchers.
Full-Stack Quantum Error Correction Training
Quantum error correction remains essential for scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computers, yet expertise has remained fragmented between classical coding theory and quantum information science. QuBriC (Bridging Quantum and Classical Error Correction for Scalable Fault-tolerant Quantum Computing) aims to close that gap by training researchers across the full stack, from theory and algorithms to hardware implementation and experimental validation.
The consortium includes leading academic institutions and industry partners. The seven quantum companies are:
- Alice & Bob, Riverlane, IQM, Quantinuum, Pasqal, QuiX Quantum, and Quandela
- ETH Zürich, TU Delft, University College London (UCL), and INRIA
- Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) as coordinating institution, along with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Freie Universität Berlin, Chalmers University of Technology, University of Edinburgh, and others
Christophe Vuillot, Principal Research Scientist for quantum error correction at Alice & Bob, said that quantum error correction “sits at the heart of any fault-tolerant quantum computer, interacting with all aspects of it.” He added that QuBriC brings together leading universities, research institutes and quantum companies to train researchers and bridge these gaps, combining expertise from quantum information, coding theory and hardware engineering. This next generation of researchers will be essential to accelerating the path to useful, fault-tolerant quantum computers.
Industry Collaboration and Talent Pipeline
As an industry partner, Alice & Bob will participate in the network’s research and training activities while contributing its expertise in cat-qubit-based error correction. The partnership also gives Alice & Bob access to a network focused on developing specialized quantum error-correction talent.
Alice & Bob specializes in cat qubits, a technology developed by the company’s founders that is designed to suppress bit-flip errors at the hardware level. Alice & Bob says its architecture could reduce hardware requirements for a useful large-scale quantum computer by up to 200 times compared with competing approaches. Founded in 2020, Alice & Bob says it has raised €180 million and employs more than 250 people. The company is advised by Nobel Prize-winning researchers. The company’s stated goal is to build the first universal, fault-tolerant quantum computer.
MSCA Doctoral Networks support international consortia of universities, research organizations and industry partners that jointly recruit, train and supervise doctoral researchers. Doctoral candidates undertake interdisciplinary research while working across academic and industrial environments. The MSCA programme, celebrating its 30th anniversary, has supported more than 150,000 researchers, including 23 Nobel Prize winners.
