IQM to Deliver First South America Quantum Computer to Eldorado
Key Takeaways
Regional entry: IQM signed a purchase agreement to install Spark at Eldorado in Campinas in the first quarter of 2027.
Hybrid access: The deal pairs an on-premises Spark with remote use of IQM’s 54-qubit European cloud system.
Private purchase: IQM describes the order as the first quantum computer buy by a private research institute in Brazil.
IQM Quantum Computers announced a purchase agreement on September 17, 2026, with Brazil’s Eldorado Research Institute for an on-premises IQM Spark superconducting system at Eldorado’s Campinas headquarters, about 100 kilometers northwest of São Paulo, due in the first quarter of 2027. The agreement also grants remote access to IQM’s 54-qubit cloud-based system in Europe and logs the first IQM South America quantum computer, pairing owned hardware with larger cloud workloads for local researchers, universities, and industry partners.
On-Premises Spark and Cloud Access
Official product pages list Spark as a 5-qubit superconducting computer sold for university and research-lab work. The September 17 release does not publish a qubit count for the Campinas rack.
The 54-qubit figure in the announcement refers to a separate European cloud system, consistent with IQM Radiance machines IQM lists as 20 qubits and upgradable to 54. Teams in Brazil are expected to write and debug applications on the owned Spark, then move larger workloads to the cloud rack when a problem needs more qubits.
| What, Where, When? | Details |
|---|---|
| On-premises hardware | IQM Spark, 5-qubit product class, Campinas headquarters |
| Cloud access | IQM 54-qubit system hosted in Europe |
| Install window | First quarter of 2027 |
| Campus setting | Eldorado HQ beside the University of Campinas (Unicamp) in Brazil’s largest technology cluster |
Eldorado and partners plan to use the stack to explore quantum algorithms, build hardware and software skill, and study hybrid designs tying high-performance computing, quantum processors, and artificial intelligence. Superintendent José Bertuzzo said the institute is putting money into people and local knowledge as well as the machine itself.
Brazil Purchase and Regional Footprint
The IQM South America quantum computer is the company’s first sale in the region and, per IQM, the first quantum computer purchase by a private research institute in Brazil. Price was not disclosed.
Eldorado, a nonprofit research body with more than 27 years of work in information and communications technology, automotive, agribusiness, energy, oil and gas, fintech, and healthcare, runs sites in Campinas, Manaus, Porto Alegre, and Brasília. The Campinas campus sits on Avenida Alan Turing in Cidade Universitária, next to Unicamp, and is meant to open the machine to universities, startups, and industry partners in those sectors.
Jan Goetz, CEO and co-founder of IQM, said Brazil already has talent and research depth and has lacked direct access to real quantum computers. Goetz framed ownership as the way local engineers start building capability now rather than waiting.
In August 2026 IQM reported an order backlog of €102 million ($117 million), with 26 full-stack systems sold and 17 delivered worldwide, including its first United States installation. Shares trade as IQMX on Nasdaq. The Campinas order extends a 2026 run of on-premises Spark and Radiance placements after IQM’s July listing.
Bottom Line
IQM will place a Spark in Campinas in the first quarter of 2027 and open a 54-qubit European cloud path for Eldorado partners.
