Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) hosted a Quantum Educators Workshop in early June 2026 that introduced 45 faculty members and academic leaders from colleges across the United States to its pioneering Quantum Technician Bootcamp, establishing a replicable model for preparing technicians to support the commercial quantum industry.
Quantum Technician Bootcamp Curriculum and Hands-On Methods
CNM launched the first Quantum Technician Bootcamp of its kind in the United States in September 2025. The immersive program runs 10 weeks at 40 hours per week with no prerequisites in mathematics or science, enabling graduates to enter roles building, operating, and maintaining quantum systems as the technology moves from laboratory research to commercial deployment. The second cohort recently completed training, with multiple graduates already hired by quantum companies in the Albuquerque area.
The curriculum covers six core areas delivered through hands-on sessions:
- Introduction to Quantum Information Systems
- Quantum Curriculum for First-Year Students
- IBM Qiskit in the Classroom
- Designing a Virtual Quantum Optics Lab
- Quantum Key Distribution
- Atomic Quantum Systems
National Workshop Expands Quantum Workforce Development
Workshop participants explored CNM’s instructional strategies with the goal of adapting elements for their own institutions. Faculty from the College of Southern Maryland and Palm Beach State College were among those attending, alongside representatives from colleges spanning multiple states.
CNM developed the bootcamp in partnership with Sandia National Laboratories and serves as the lead institution for quantum technician workforce development within Elevate Quantum, the U.S. Department of Commerce-designated Regional Technology and Innovation Hub covering New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. Qunnect Field Engineer Shane Andrewski noted the program’s value in supplying technicians for commercial quantum networking deployments, contrasting with traditional perceptions of quantum roles requiring advanced research degrees.
By sharing its training model nationally, CNM is helping broaden accessible pathways into quantum careers and strengthening the talent pipeline required for industry scaling.
